Legal Research Intern

About Collective Liberty:
Collective Liberty is an award winning NGO whose mission is to eradicate human trafficking by collaborating across industries, agencies, and service providers to create ground-breaking, data-driven approaches that work. By encouraging the existing human trafficking community and other stakeholders to think in new and innovative ways, we address, disrupt and put an end to all forms of trafficking. We work closely with government agencies to shift systems and improve public policy to ensure as a community we support survivors while stopping traffickers.

Internship Description:
Collective Liberty knows the power of laws, particularly at the state and local level. Over the past three years members of Collective Liberty have helped to pass strategic legislation in over 60 state and municipal jurisdictions that directly affect how we as a country can begin to change the systems that have enabled trafficking. Collective Liberty’s greater focus on state and municipal laws as a catalyst for change, as compared to a primary focus on federal laws, means that there is a greater need for up to date research to be able to react to a constantly changing field.
Collective Liberty is therefore seeking an intern to primarily assist with legal research and analysis. This will be a unique opportunity to help develop a thorough compilation of how communities throughout the US and North America legislate around trafficking, businesses, commercial and private real estate, transportation, safe housing, and more. This is an ideal opportunity for a current or recent law student looking to enhance their legal research skills, particularly when it comes to state and local laws.
Interns will have at least one consistent project that they will work on for the duration of the semester (Fall, Spring, or Summer) and will receive regular guidance and support from their Collective Liberty supervisor. Projects will be determined when the intern begins and will be based on an intern’s interest, background/skills, and the organization’s need.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research of state and local laws
  • Conduct research of current and proposed federal laws
  • Analyze gaps in legislation to determine weak areas that need assistance/intervention and strong areas that can potentially be modeled as promising practices
  • Assess whether there are legislative gaps that might hinder successful enforcement
  • Work closely with training, data, and policy teams to ensure they have up to date knowledge to guide the development, and necessary adjustment, of yearly strategy

    Required Qualifications
  • Current or recent law students
  • Experience conducting research from primary and secondary sources
  • Experience presenting research findings in a clear, concise manner
  • Ability to develop creative solutions to research barriers or opaqueness

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to access common law databases
  • Foreign language skills preferred including Spanish, Mandarin, Korean, and Indigenous/First Nation languages (e.g. Quechua, Nahuatl, Mixtec, Navajo)

    Working Hours and Duration
  • All intern positions are remote. Meetings will be conducted via Google Video
  • Collective Liberty does typically work on a 9am-5pm EST schedule but because positions are remote interns can work with their supervisor to determine what their exact hours will be. All interns are expected to have at least 1 hour a week during normal business hours to work with Collective Liberty staff
  • Interns will work the hours required by their program or an average of 10-15 hours a week
  • Interns will have the opportunity to extend for an additional semester depending on availability of projects and intern’s performance
